INVESTMENTS IN THE WELL-BEING OF HIGHER EDUCATION STUDENTS MUST BE MADE IMMEDIATELY – THE FINNISH STUDENTS ON THE MOVE ACTION PROGRAMME SHOULD BE EXTENDED TO PROPERLY COVER THE HIGHER EDUCATION INSTITUTIONS!

Prime Minister Antti Rinne’s Government proposes that an appropriation of two million euros be allocated for the Finnish Students on the Move action programme in the government’s budget proposal for 2020. The Finnish Student Sports Federation (OLL) demands that higher education students will not be left empty-handed but a significant proportion of the appropriation be reserved for the promotion of the physical well-being of higher education students.

The expansion of the Finnish Schools on the Move action programme to cover various phases of life is included in the current Government Programme. The Finnish Schools on the Move action programme has already been expanded to cover the upper secondary level and higher education level in the form of the Finnish Students on the Move programme. However, to date, no proper resources have been assigned to higher education students in the Finnish Students on the Move programme.

“The investments of the budget proposal made in the Finnish Students on the Move programme must finally be expanded to cover the entire higher education. The Finnish Government must invest in promoting exercise in higher education institutions and increasing the physical activity of higher education students,” says Joonas Suikula, President at Finnish Student Sports Federation.

In order to extend the Finnish Students on the Move programme to properly cover all the Finnish higher education institutions, the practices tried and tested during the Finnish Schools on the Move action programme implementation should be preserved in the expansion, while paying attention to the special characteristics of the higher education institutions. Furthermore, the results of the external education evaluation (2019) conducted by the Finnish Education Evaluation Centre (FINEEC) as well as the updated national Recommendations for University Sports (2018) should be utilised in the expansion. The successful implementation of the expansion requires financial resources.

“The Finnish Student Sports Federation is pleased with the appropriations for the Finnish Students on the Move programme in the budget proposal. However, it is now the time to ensure sufficient resources for the development of the physical activity of higher education students. Finland cannot afford to lose the work ability of the shapers of the future!” says Suikula.

OLL is happy to take part in the further development of the Finnish Students on the Move programme.
