The Finnish Student Sports Federation invites students to test their exercise habits and study ability

The Finnish Student Sports Federation (OLL) is reminding people in September and October of the importance exercise in maintaining and improving study ability.

During the #BeActive theme weeks from 20 September to 4 October, the OLL encourages students to take a look at their exercise habits and study ability with an online test at oll.fi/quicktest.

“Exercise is not just about doing something to break into a sweat or doing sports in a club. It’s also about incorporating exercise as a daily part of studying in campuses and classrooms,” says OLL Vice President Marika Uusi-Illikainen.

“Exercise that boosts study ability is created both with space and furniture solutions and functional study methods and having regular breaks in study. This quick test takes into account students’ active choices and solutions by higher education institutions to support more active choices,” says Uusi-Illikainen.

This test is based on the Moving for a better study ability model created by the Finnish Student Sports Federation, the Finnish Students on the Move programme and the Finnish Student Health Service (FSHS). The model itself is based on the study ability model updated in 2022. The model promotes the importance of exercise for learning, gives students and others tips to support their study ability and tools for discussing exercise.

The theme weeks begin on Friday, 20 September with UNESCO’s international Higher Education on the Move day. #BeActive, on the other hand, refers to the European Week of Sport established by the European Commission that is partly funded by the Erasmus+ programme. During the theme weeks, the Finnish Student Sports Federation will also participate in three campaigns: Liikkumalla työkykyä nyt” campaign (“Better work ability through exercise”), the Make a move campaign by the public administration, and the Active nation and people cooperation promoted by the Olympic Committee and other parties.

“The health and financial benefits of exercise have been discussed more and more, resulting in a range of related campaigns. We bring students and study ability into all these campaigns. Good study ability and the knowing how to maintain it create a solid basis for a good work ability and looking after yourself throughout your life,” says OLL Niko Peltokangas, Head of Communications & International Affairs.
