Celebrating its centenary, the Finnish Student Sports Federation strengthens co-operation within the higher education community to encourage people to be more physically active
In its latest Extraordinary General Assembly, the Finnish Student Sports Federation (OLL) changed its rules to strengthen co-operation within the entire higher education community in promoting a more physically active lifestyle among students and improve their ability to study.
Closer co-operation between student unions and higher education institutions is a key element in OLL’s strategy, approved last autumn for the 2024–2028 period. Under the new rules, higher education institutions may also become full members of OLL. Previously, only a separate cooperation membership was possible. The rule change, approved for the second time in the Extraordinary General Assembly, will enter into force once it has been entered in the Register of Associations.
“Following the change, the Finnish Student Sports Federation will nevertheless continue to be very much led by the students, and now we are even better equipped to pool our resources and give more backing to the University on the Move co-operation. This is our contribution to the wider ‘Finland – an active nation and people’ concept. We promise, together with all other members of the higher education community, to improve higher education students’ ability to study,” says OLL President Mio Kortelainen.
“Finland – an active nation and people” is a concept established by the Finnish Olympic Committee, the Finnish Broadcasting Company Yle, Deloitte and various Finnish associations and organisations to restore active lifestyles and functional capacity into strengths in Finland and to bring about permanent change. OLL’s key goal is to increase the number of students that have enough exercise, to reduce sedentary behaviour and to make higher education sports equal and accessible to all.
In addition to making the rule change, the Extraordinary General Assembly made changes to OLL’s board. Linda Spring, Master of Public Health, was elected as a new board member. She works as a sports planner at Zone, Universities of Applied Sciences Sport Services.
