OLL launched its election campaign by getting the candidates moving
The Finnish Student Sports Federation (OLL) launched its county and municipal election campaign at the outdoor gym in Otaniemi, Espoo on 5th March. The Federation is offering up four solutions to promote physical activity among students and all residents. At the launch event exercise was used to illustrate these solutions.

At our election event, county and municipal election candidates and students took part in some playful circuit training with exercises that highlighted opportunities to promote physical activity.
On “the stairs of decision-making”, the participants found out why students should be seen as a separate group alongside children, young people and other age groups in the decision-making. “Cross-party push-ups” offered an opportunity to practise the kind of collaboration that is required for well-working service chains.
“Balancing the municipal economy” included a discussion on student discounts on sports services. “Budget negotiation stretching” had the participants discussing topics such as building local exercise facilities.
OLL’s four solutions also set the rhythm for the joint warm-up led by Vice President Nette Rimpioja, which you can see in the video below.
Candidates’ views on physical activity
The participating candidates familiarised themselves with OLL’s election themes and gave us their views on how to promote physical activity among students.
Matias Suni from the Centre Party in Espoo particularly wants to promote incidental exercise and the local nature.
“I would like young people and young adults to also exercise more as part of their school day.”
Liisa Tuomi and Elina Rodriguez from the Left Alliance in Espoo emphasised the preventative side of exercise from the perspective of social welfare and health care.
“Physical activity has a huge impact on students’ coping, sleep and enthusiasm for their studies, as well as community and sociability,” Tuomi said.
“Young people in particular must be able to access sports services in an accessible and affordable way,” Rodriguez said.
Otto Jämsen from the Social Democratic Party in Helsinki is campaigning for increased exercise opportunities for young people.
“Sports and exercise help students to make friends and support their coping and studies.”
OLL wants to thank all participants! Find more sports candidates on the sports community’s campaign website (in Finnish).
