Students and teachers want less sitting and more movement in education

In their new video, The Finnish Student Sports Federation (OLL) and The Union for University Teachers and Researchers in Finland (YLL) begin the fight for reduced sitting time and more active teaching models. The video Movement drives Achy away shows in a concise way how to tame “Achy” arising from a lack of movement – that is, how moving more can increase energy and lead to better study results.

“Higher education students sit for up to 11 hours a day, way too much for their health. The Recommendations for University Sports, published as early as in 2018, call for a change in the facilities and the culture in higher education institutions to reduce sitting” says Julia Tuuri, OLL’s President.

"The coronavirus situation has reduced teaching in higher education to one-sided online video seminars and, according to surveys, has increased tiredness among both teachers and students. Many teachers wonder how to increase well-being and activity during Zoom lectures, in addition to the exercise breaks”, says Jonna Kangas, Board Member in YLL.

OLL and teachers will also be collecting tips and experiences on how to tame “Achy”. We are collecting the tips on OLL’s web page for the Higher Education on the Move project at oll.fi/juili and on social media using the hashtag #juili.
