The Finnish Student Sports Federation: Higher education students must be accepted into the students on the move program

Published:

The Finnish Student Sports Federation (Opiskelijoiden Liikuntaliitto ry, OLL) demands that Finnish higher education institutions and their 300 000 students must be accepted into the Students on the Move program. In order for the Students on the Move program to succeed, higher education students must be included in it.

“OLL is grateful for the Finnish government’s decision to broaden the Finnish Schools on the Move program to include upper secondary and vocational schools, thus becoming the Students on the Move program. However, it is completely incomprehensible to leave higher education institutions and their students out the program”, comments Soile Koski-Aho, president of OLL.

“At the moment, only a third of higher education students get enough exercise to stay healthy. In addition, according to the University Student Health Survey (2016, compiled by the Finnish Student Health Service) higher education students might sit for as much as 10 hours a day daily. It is a necessity to broaden the Students on the Move program, its measures and its funding towards increasing physical activity in higher education students as well”, states Koski-Aho.
